Wounded Knee Mountain in Northern California
One of the encounters between the white man and the Indians supposedly unfolded in the following way perhaps somewhere near what today is called "Wounded Knee Mountain".
The honor of the local Indian chief had been damaged by the actions of a certain white man who subsequently was taken prisoner. In order to settle the matter of the dispute and to restore his honor the Indian chief suggested that a shootout (duel) be conducted in which he would take the first shot. This was an opportunity the prisoner could not refuse because he knew that, if he refused to participate in the duel, he would finally be killed. Indeed, it was a real opportunity for the prisoner because he was able to negotiate the distance for the shootout.
Now, this prisoner was no ordinary man as he was a little taller than the tallest of any man around and physically also a little stronger. He also had earned himself a frightening name and because of the brutal power of his fists was called Old Shatter Hand. All of that shouldn't matter in a shootout, except for the fact that Old Shatter Hand handled his heavy bear killing rifle as if it was a toy.
The action finally began. The opponents took their position about 80 yards apart. Old Shatter Hand decided that he would face his opponent broad side, in other words, make it easy for the Indian chief to hit him. He figured the chief was too nervous to aim correctly, besides, Indians of that time were known to be very bad target shooters.
When the agreed upon sign was given the Indian chief took aim... then pulled the trigger... and missed as expected. Too bad, because he didn't get another chance. But, to make it difficult to get shot the Indian chief immediately turned sideways. Old Shatter Hand didn't like that, so he made the chief understand that it wasn't his intention to kill him, that he only wanted to smash one of his knees. The Indian chief was not impressed and still fearing for his life remained positioned sideways. Old Shatter Hand then let the Indian chief know that, if he didn't turn to face him, he then would have no choice but smash both of his knees with one shot - and that is exactly what happened, the Indian Chief collapsed and had to be carried away never to be able to walk again.
